Tanner Strunk

Producer/Musician

Hey there, this page is to share more about my adventure in the world of music and audio.

I started recording music back in 2012 when I was about 14 years old with nothing but a laptop, single channel interface, a guitar, a Shure sm58 microphone with a broken grille, and a dusty old Peavy mixer from 1978 (bought by sharing the price with a friend). As a beginner who had no internet to rely on for answers until 2023, no mentor, and no money for courses, I believed I had no chance in this industry. That is, I didn't think I had what it takes to become a REAL producer instead of just a bedroom producer with a guitar.

However, as a solo musician for the next decade and a writer who absolutely HAD to see my ideas come together, I spent countless nights focusing on my craft and trying new techniques, recording my ideas through my own original (usually non-standard) methods. After a long process of trial and error that spanned years at a time, something about the process of getting things to sound "better than before" made me think I was onto something. Naturally, most of those tracks ended up sounding like garbage - but that's what kept me coming back and trying unorthodox methods.

That's when it hit me.

Music isn't a science project - it's a language spoken through various dialects, characteristics, and delivery - and it deserves to be translated as such. As a literature nerd alongside my obsession with music, that made perfect sense to me.

That idea changed my world at around 20 yrs old when I started my real journey to learn how I can help bring authentic, raw personality back into the world of production.

Living in a house without internet to rely on until the year 2023 might sound scary or even unfathomable to some; but honestly, it helped me understand how to actually LEARN about what I was doing and put it into PRACTICE rather than take the words of YouTubers or others trying to sell their methods online. Granted, there is some amazing advice out there, but so many people following the same instructions made me want to attempt something different - something real and unique.

This is where I consider my real "college years" started and when I decided to put things into motion by recording and releasing music with my band Queen Jayne as the test subject (pictured to the right).

After studying what methods modern-day producers were utilizing and diving deep into the world of information online, I learned there were things I adored in the older styles of music I grew up listening to and things I liked about the modern listening experience alike. What I started to understand during those "college years" of audio is how often modern producers rely on CPU heavy, overtly falsified (sampled) techniques instead of getting a great natural source with its own voice. As I continued forward and found tutors who I felt still captured the true essence of musical instruments, I realized there truly is a way to bridge the gap between modern and vintage - utilizing mixing methods both inside and outside the box without compromising the natural tones of YOUR instrument or voice.

That's where the idea of Splitbone Studios started to emerge.

I decided to start this company not just because I adore the music making process and seeing everything come alive and come together, but because I wanted to contribute to the original, raw, organic side of the music world I feel like we've been lacking for so long.

That said, my entire story revolves around my love of music, my passion for seeing art come together, and being as authentic as possible with artists to give them a real, true voice of their own. If you've ever felt sick with the "radio sounds" of today, you're not alone - and now you can record and hear your music as it's own entity with Splitbone Studios.
